Austria digital vignette: motorways, plates and enforcement
In Austria, motorway operator ASFINAG funds the federal motorway and expressway network (A and S roads) through a vignette obligation. The digital vignette is linked to your licence plate, so automatic toll checks and roadside controls can verify entitlement reliably.
Which products exist?
For cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t maximum permissible weight and for motorcycles there are four vignette types: 1 day, 10 days, 2 months and 1 year. The annual vignette is valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year — 14 months. You pick the right product during checkout.

Key rules: 18-day window, replacement toll and VAT
If you plan to buy the Austrian digital vignette online, settle plate format, registration country and start date first. Important: consumers have a statutory right of withdrawal — the 2-month and annual vignettes therefore start earliest 18 days after purchase, unless you waive that right.
Immediate validity or 18-day window?
1-day and 10-day vignettes are valid immediately. The 2-month and annual vignettes are valid for consumers only from the 18th day after purchase. Businesses can — under the Austrian Consumer Protection Act (KSchG) — choose immediate validity.
Replacement toll, fines and heavy vehicles
If an ASFINAG check detects driving without a valid vignette, a replacement toll (Ersatzmaut) of € 120 (cars) or € 65 (motorcycles) applies. If it is not paid, the BStMG provides for fines between € 300 and € 3,000. Vehicles above 3.5 t are not subject to the vignette but to the kilometre-based GO toll system.

What data do I need to order?
You need the plate exactly as on the vehicle, registration country, vehicle category, validity start date and an e-mail for confirmation. Wrong plate or country means the vignette will not count in ASFINAG automated checks — even if payment succeeded.
Is the vignette valid immediately after purchase?
1-day and 10-day products can usually start immediately or on a date you choose. For 2-month and annual vignettes, consumer orders often have an earliest start 18 days after purchase (withdrawal rights). You pick the start date in the form; validity ends automatically (annual vignette until 31 January of the following year).
Does it work with foreign plates?

What if I drive without a valid vignette?
Substitute toll (Ersatzmaut) is EUR 200 for cars/motorhomes up to 3.5 t and EUR 100 for motorcycles. Non-payment can lead to proceedings and fines from EUR 300 to EUR 3,000. Tampering with adhesive vignettes may double substitute toll to EUR 400.
