Price & Payment

How is the final amount calculated in practice?

The total is the official ASFINAG price for the chosen vignette plus, depending on channel, a service fee for online handling. The binding amount is always the final checkout total including VAT.

How much does the Austria digital vignette cost in 2026?

Official ASFINAG prices 2026 for cars (≤ 3.5 t): 1-day € 9.60 · 10-day € 12.80 · 2-month € 32.00 · annual € 106.80. Motorcycles: € 3.80 / € 6.40 / € 16.10 / € 42.40. Service fees may apply on private portals.

Why do prices differ between websites?

The ASFINAG vignette itself costs the same everywhere. Differences arise from service fees, support, payment handling or convenience features on private portals. Compare final totals.

When does the order become binding?

The order becomes binding on clicking “Place binding order”. Check plate, country, vignette type, start date and final amount carefully beforehand.

Validity

When does the digital vignette become valid?

1-day and 10-day vignettes are valid immediately. 2-month and annual vignettes are valid for consumers only from the 18th day after purchase (statutory withdrawal period). Businesses may choose immediate validity.

How long is the Austrian annual vignette valid?

The annual vignette is valid for 14 months: from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year. The 2026 annual vignette therefore runs from 1 Dec 2025 to 31 Jan 2027.

Can I buy the vignette in advance?

Yes. Pick the start date in checkout. 1-day and 10-day can start immediately; 2-month and annual carry the statutory 18-day window for consumers.

Plate & Data

Which data is mandatory?

Plate number, registration country, vehicle category (car or motorcycle), start date and an e-mail address. The digital vignette is plate-bound — spelling and country must match exactly.

What happens if I make a typo in the plate?

Because the vignette is bound to the plate, a wrong character can cause an invalid match at ASFINAG’s automated toll check. Verify every character before completing the order.

How should hyphens or special characters be entered?

Use the spelling on the plate exactly. German plates require the city hyphen (e.g. M-AB 1234). Austrian plates use a hyphen after the district code (e.g. W-12345A).

Are there special rules for foreign plates?

Yes. Correct registration country and exact character sequence are critical. Common pitfalls: missing German city hyphen, Italian province codes, or wrong capitalisation.

Vehicle Types

Does the vignette apply to motorcycles?

Yes. Motorcycles have their own reduced tariff (annual € 42.40 in 2026). Choose the right vehicle category in checkout — toll checks match plate and category automatically.

What about trailers?

In Austria, only the towing vehicle needs a vignette. Trailers do not need their own vignette, provided the combined weight stays below 3.5 t — otherwise the GO-toll system (per-kilometre) applies.

How are motorhomes or vans classified?

Motorhomes and vans up to 3.5 t max permissible weight count as cars and need the standard digital vignette. Above 3.5 t they fall under ASFINAG’s GO toll.

Legal

Why are T&Cs and privacy required?

T&Cs define the contractual framework of e-vignette.at’s service, privacy defines GDPR-compliant data processing. Without consent no legally valid completion is possible.

What does early expiry of the right of withdrawal mean?

For immediate execution of digital services the statutory right of withdrawal expires upon full performance. This consent is required for immediate validity of 1-day and 10-day vignettes.

Which documents should I keep?

Keep order confirmation, invoice and proof of payment. Companies should also store documents per vehicle for tax purposes.

Security

How to recognise trustworthy purchase pages?

Trustworthy pages clearly state their role (private service portal vs. official ASFINAG shop), show full legal texts, transparently break down pricing and use HTTPS.

What to check before payment?

Domain (e-vignette.at), full final amount, visible legal texts and correct vehicle data. This avoids corrections later or issues at toll checks.

Where is the official ASFINAG sales channel?

The official ASFINAG webshop is at shop.asfinag.at. Sticker vignettes are also available at petrol stations, tobacconists (Trafik) and post offices in Austria as well as at petrol stations near the borders.

Replacement toll & fines

What happens when driving without a valid vignette?

An ASFINAG check (automated plate recognition or roadside) triggers a replacement toll (Ersatzmaut): € 120 for cars, € 65 for motorcycles. If unpaid, BStMG provides for a fine between € 300 and € 3,000.

What exactly is the Ersatzmaut?

The Ersatzmaut under § 19 BStMG is a flat-rate top-up payment in lieu of administrative penalty proceedings. It can be paid on the spot and is € 120 for cars / € 65 for motorcycles, regardless of the vignette price.

When is a vignette invalid?

A vignette is invalid if the plate was entered incorrectly, validity has not yet started or has expired, or the vehicle category is wrong (e.g. motorcycle vignette used on a car).

General

Which search terms are particularly relevant?

Common searches: “Austria digital vignette”, “10-day vignette Austria”, “annual vignette Austria 2026”, “buy vignette Austria”, “ASFINAG vignette online”, “motorcycle vignette Austria”.

Why compare ASFINAG price and total?

The ASFINAG list price is not always the actual total at private resellers. A reliable decision requires direct comparison on final-total level including all service fees.

Does this checkout cover GO-toll (above 3.5 t)?

No. This checkout is for the digital vignette for cars and motorcycles up to 3.5 t. Trucks, buses and heavy motorhomes use ASFINAG’s GO toll (separate platform and GO-Box).

Order Process

Which sequence is recommended?

First verify plate and country, then choose vignette type and start date, then read pricing and legal texts, finally place the binding order.

Common mistakes before completion?

Typical: swapped plate characters, wrong country, wrong vignette type (e.g. 10-day instead of 2-month), forgotten start date, or hastily ticking checkboxes.

Final check before payment?

Yes. A final plausibility check avoids corrections later: plate, category, country, vignette type, start date, e-mail and final amount must be correct.

Business

Recommended internal processes?

Clear responsibilities, standardised data capture per vehicle, documented approvals and audit-safe storage of all purchase evidence (invoice with VAT).

Multi-vehicle ordering?

Use a central fleet list with plate, category, vignette type and start date. As a business you can choose immediate validity for 2-month and annual vignettes, which simplifies planning.
